The print picture has the motif of a cherry blossom, viewed up close, and uses paint, a linoleum block, and paper as its media. Skills I learned were stippling and crosshatching using a carving tool, and layering colors during printing. The main art elements I used were value, shape, texture, and color. I used value to show the contrasts in the different parts of the flower as it hits the light, I did this in the amount I cut from the block using stippling (more stippling gives it a lighter value and less gives in a darker value). I used stippling and the absence of color to show crevices on the surface of the flower, giving it texture. Shape was used to define the outlines of the petals and the filaments, and the dark background behind. I used color to create the different layers in my print and add details and overall mood. The art elements and the skills I used convey how natural light affects the appearance of the things around us and adds complexity in value and texture. Also I used color and value to convey different moods, such as how my pink print invokes a lighter, more brilliant response, while my blue, silver, and purple print has a more complex feel and a cooler tone because of the darker variations in it. Together the prints can be seen as a day versus night contrast.
